What We’re Currently Reading

I (Teri) am currently zooming through all of N.T. Wright’s books (“The Last Word”, “The Challenge of Jesus”, “Who Was Jesus”, “Simply Christian”, and my personal favorite, “Surprised by Hope.” I was told Wright is a little academic, but I have personally found his style to be quite invigorating. And in case you think I only read good stuff, I should also confess that I am a hopeless scifi/fantasy addict and am currently on book 4 of the never-ending “Wheel of Time” series. I’m quite sure that as soon as Paul discovers I’ve added this tab to the site, he’ll want to jump in to balance my guilty pleasure reading with more erudite offerings. LOL

I (Paul) have just finished Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller. This is an incredibly insightful analysis of the ways we look for love, along with security, fulfillment and meaning, in all the wrong places.  The subtitle reads “The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters,” but this book deals with our tendency to be “idol factories” on a much deeper level.  While you’re ordering this book, by all means add to your shopping cart Keller’s masterpiece, The Reason for God, which is nothing less than the Mere Christianity for our generation.
